The coast saves its best for evening.
When the wind drops and the cliffs go amber, the Algarve is best seen from a slow deck with a drink in hand. Catamarans sail the caves out of Lagos, open-bar cruisers leave Vilamoura, and the lagoon boats off Faro time the run to the last of the sun.
Go looking for dolphins.
Common dolphins ride the bow off this coast most of the year, and a good skipper finds them without the chase. The best trips pair the pods with the Benagil caves and put a marine biologist on board to tell you what you are watching.
Trade the boat for a jeep.
Ten minutes inland the resorts vanish into cork oak, dirt track and whitewashed hill village. Half-day 4x4 runs into the Monchique hills, tuk-tuks through the old towns, safaris that finish with a long vineyard lunch.
Where the Algarve turns wild.
Past Lagos the resorts thin out and the coast bares its teeth: Atlantic swell, empty cliff-top beaches and the old fort at Sagres where Europe once ran out of land. This is the coast for surf lessons, coasteering off the rocks and a sunset jeep run into the natural park.
